Each of us is constituted differently in terms of the doshas. This determines your body type, which is like a blueprint that outlines the innate tendencies built in to your system. Nature needs all three doshas to build and sustain a healthy body; the final expression of the harmonious and smooth interaction of all three doshas culminates in your basic character, which Ayurveda calls prakriti. It has to have Kapha, or structure, to hold cells together and to form muscles, fat, bones, and sinew. It depends on Pitta, or metabolism, to process food, to activate enzymes, to properly metabolize food, air, and water through the biochemical pathways, and to keep the intellect functioning.
Certain body types are prone to certain types of disorders. By knowing your body type you can focus more precisely on your diet and on the kind of exercise and daily routine that you should have, which is very important when dealing with any health problem, whether it's overweight or diabetes or arthritis or insomnia. In other words, one specific dosha is predominant in your nature. If you are a Vata type, that means Vata characteristics are more prominent in you; likewise for Pitta and Kapha types.
