However, there are always exceptions, and it is certainly not impossible for a diabetic individual to have primarily psychological problems as the cause of erectile dysfunction. When seeing diabetic patients who have peripheral nerve damage problem and subsequent complaints - for example, lower extremity numbness or burning in the lower extremities - we can predict that most of them will already have erectile dysfunction. From 35 to 70 percent of diabetic patients will develop erectile dysfunction as a complication of the disease. Erectile dysfunction in most diabetics is due to chronic complications involving both the small-vessel disease and the nerve damage/ neuropathy. Both groups are also susceptible to peripheral nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy). Both groups are also susceptible to larger-vessel occlusive disease affecting coronary arteries in the heart and the cerebrovascular vessels supplying the brain. Both types suffer from the side effects of small-vessel disease, causing retinal damage and renal problems affecting overall kidney function.

Type II patients are non-insulin-dependent. The first are categorized as Type I, or insulin-dependent diabetics. Two types of patients have diabetes.
